The Mentawai Islands
A tropical Indonesian archipelago where jungle meets reef and Indian Ocean swells shape the world’s most storied surf region
The Mentawai Islands sit off West Sumatra, Indonesia, a tropical arc where jungle meets reef and long, ruler-edge waves wrap the points.
A chain of over 70 islands about 150 km off the coast of West Sumatra, the main inhabited islands are Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai and South Pagai. HT’s/Lance’s Right breaks on Sipora, directly infront of Villa Onu.
It’s remote enough to feel private, yet perfectly placed for world-class surf. If you’re dreaming of HT’s (Hollow Trees/Lance’s Right), glassy mornings and white-sand afternoons, you’re in the right place.
How to get to the Mentawai Islands
Being a remote island chain, there are a couple of steps to reaching the Mentawai Islands, and the exact route depends on your final destination. In short the steps are:
- Fly to Padang (PDG): Several flight options from Jakarta or Bali, Medan, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
- Crossing to Sipora: options include the Mentawai Fast Ferry, private speedboat or charter flights/private plane. (Note: you may need to stay one night in Padang based on your choice of travel)
