The new 1500 metre runway, constructed as part of the New Mentawai Airport Development was completed in late 2024, providing a safe and suitable runway for airlines to land. While the government plans to encourage larger airlines like Wings Air, Citilink and others to fly their larger ATR aircraft to the islands, they are still in discussions and there are no confirmed routes yet.
In late 2023, Susi Air started operating a limited schedule between Padang and Rokot Airport Mentawai which was great news for people who don’t like long ferry rides. They have now updated their schedule to offer more flights per week between Padang and Rokot, which is great news for people coming to Mentawai.

- Route: Padang ↔ Rokot (Mentawai)
- Frequency: 2 return flights per week (Tuesday and Friday)
- Flight time: ~40 minutes
Typical Schedule:
- Padang → Rokot (Mentawai): Departs 07:00 – Arrives 07:40
- Rokot (Mentawai) → Padang: Departs 07:50 – Arrives 08:30
⚠️ Note: Because flights depart Padang at 07:00, you’ll need to stay overnight in Padang if arriving from Bali, Jakarta, or Kuala Lumpur the previous day. For the most up to date schedule check at Traveloka.
Flight Duration
The journey takes just 40 minutes. Flying at low altitude offers incredible views of the West Sumatran coastline and the Mentawai Islands—an experience in itself compared to the long ferry ride.

Currently, ticket prices are:
- Padang → Rokot: Rp 494,595 (~$30 USD).
- Rokot → Padang: Rp 412,390 (~$25 USD).
- Pricing includes 5kg luggage + 5kg hold luggage
👉 Compared to the Mentawai Fast Ferry, the cost is similar but with faster travel time.
Susi Air’s Latest Baggage Regulations as of 2025
We would like to inform all Susi Air passengers that, starting February 21, 2025, the free baggage allowance will be as follows:
- Hand carry (cabin) with a maximum weight of 5 kg, which can be a backpack/handbag.
- Baggage with a maximum weight of 5 kg can be a suitcase, cardboard box, or large bag.
The total free allowance is 10 kg, divided into 5 kg for hand carry and 5 kg for baggage.
Any excess baggage allowance will be charged, as usual, per 1 kg = IDR 15,000.
Baggage allowance can be paid at check-in using cash or bank transfer.
Included in ticket:
- 5 kg hand baggage
- 5 kg hold luggage
Excess baggage: Rp 15,000 per kg (~$1 USD/kg)
The excess baggage fee is charge per kilo over your 5kg hold luggage allowance. On a recent test the villa owners brought 2 large suitcases, 1 golf bag, 1 cabin luggage, and 2 handbags, a total of 60kg. After deducting the complimentary 10kg (5kg for me + 5kg for Vince), they paid the excess baggage fee per kilo totaling 55kg x Rp 15,000/kg = Rp 750,000.

Can you take surfboards on Susi Air to Mentawai?
And here lies the catch. No 🤦♂️ You can’t.
The planes are small so large items are not permitted, meaning you cannot fly with surfboards on Susi Air from Padang to Rokot Mentawai.
All passengers are allowed to carry their goods onto the aircraft in the form of one bag with a maximum size of 30cm x 15cm x 10cm and a maximum weight of 6 kg.

“Goods, which in our view, are over in size or weight or unreasonably interferes with, will not be allowed to enter the Passenger cabin.”
