Travel Information

How do I get to the Mentawai islands and Villa Onu

All journeys to Mentawai and Villa Onu begin with getting to Padang, West Sumatra. There are several flight options to Padang from Indonesian airports. Primarily, Jakarta and Denpasar Bali, as well as International routes from Kuala Lumpur.

Jakarta has the most daily flights to Padang and is also one of Indonesia’s biggest international airports, with flights to and from global destinations.

From Padang you will need to take a ferry to Tuapajet, where you will be met by our team, and transferred to our speedboat for the last leg to Villa Onu.

We have gone into much more detail on getting to the Mentawai Islands and specifically Villa Onu on our page – How to get to Mentawai

Do you offer transfer services?

Yes, we have several transfer options to help make your trip easy.

Please see our page – Mentawai transfer services – for more information and prices

Why do I need to stay over night in Padang?

In most cases yes. This is because the fast ferry from Padang to Mentawai leaves 7am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while the first flights arrive at around 7.30am.

Unless you have arranged a private speedboat transfer, this means you will need to wait in Padang for the ferry the following morning. Remember to check out our transfer services which can help you with transfers, hotels and more.

Where should I stay in Padang?

We recommend staying at Santika Hotel, Mercure hotel, Mercure Hotel or Budget Hotel by the Harbour. We advise you to make your  booking through booking.com.

The budget hotel by the harbor is directly in front of the boat harbor where the ferry departs. You can literally just walk to the boat harbor the next morning.

Our VIP Transfer Service includes the 2 nights of required accommodation (arrival and departure dates) in Padang at a 4-star hotel as well as your transfers from the airport to the hotel and the harbor the following morning.

Do I need travel insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory according to the villa policy. We advise to get travel insurance that covers travel delay, baggage delay, emergency medical and dental, emergency, medical transport and evacuation, and travel accident insurance. You can never know what might happen to you. – During a surf session, flight delays, or personal health. We recommend: Safety Wings, World Nomads, G1G Travel insurance, Surf Travel insurance, Cover More, Indo Surf.

How long can I stay in Indonesia

Most travelers coming from the US, Australia, and Europe are issued tourist visas upon arrival, but if you carry a passport from other countries it is worthwhile checking to see if you need a visa. The standard tourist VISA is applicable for up to 30 days. If you plan on staying longer in Indonesia you must apply for an extended stay VISA at your local Indonesian Embassy prior to departure or in Singapore.

What happens if my flight or boards do not arrive on time?

We haven’t experience this just yet, but if this does happen – no matter at what time you arrive at the airport or if you have any kind of delay, there will be someone waiting for you at the airport. Once we have received your flight details, we give these details to our villa representative – that will be picking you up from the airport and bring you to the hotel and the boat harbor and return. We would get the boards delivered to the villa on the next ferry.
