The Mentawai Surf Tax is a fee that surfers have to pay when visiting the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia, and applies to surfers both on land and boat. The tax was introduced in 2016 by the local government to help fund infrastructure development and environmental conservation efforts in the area and must be paid before your first surf.
The tax is applicable to all foreign surfers who visit the Mentawai Islands for surfing purposes.
The fee is 1 million IDR (75 USD) and is valid for 15 days and can be extended by paying again for longer trips.
It is important to note that the Mentawai Surf Tax is mandatory and must be paid before entering and surfing in the Mentawai Islands. Failure to pay the tax may result in fines or in extreme cases, even deportation.
You only need to pay this if you would like to surf in Mentawai. If you are just here to swim and enjoy the islands, you do not need to pay the Mentawai Surf Tax.
